Thank you so much, Kadri. It definitely feels scary but I can tell there is so much untapped creativity on the other side of this leap :)

I’ve made a deliberate effort this year to really curb my social media (mostly Instagram) addiction. Got rid of them all except Instagram, which I knew would be the hardest. I was already on Substack for writing, but as a photographer, Instagram was my space. So I decided to create a second Substack just for my photos. And I find myself less obsessive, less prone to body dysmorphia, etc as a result. I got rid of the app on my phone, so I can only check it at home on a computer. I only post to share links to Substack basically.

I really want to finally pull the plug but I am keenly aware of how much of my socializing revolves around IG. Not even just in terms of DMing people, but how posting, responding to Stories, etc is how you keep your existence in other people’s minds. I notice that the less I use the app, the less likely people are to reach out, because I’m out of sight out of mind. I think there’s a larger, collective problem of how IG in particular has become the crutch for so much socialization and the idea of leaving it gives me FOMO. People are slower to respond to messages elsewhere because were so addicted to being on IG that it’s easier to respond there when you’re always on the app.

Sorry, I am getting carried away. I guess I’m just sort of in your spot, I’ve been thinking of giving myself a date to finally close the app. It’s been very clear for some time that if people want to see my work, it’s here, not there. I’m just nervous about finally doing it. What made you confident that you won’t be left behind and forgotten?

I am 100%%% with you! I’ve consistently been deleting Instagram over the last couple months as a means to take a break from the app
